A Story Adapted from Antiquity - Reimagined for Today
For some time now, I have been looking for a convenient, effective way to introduce my fiction to a broader readership—as many readers as I can bring together—at low cost both to them and to me. I hope this Substack account, which I inaugurate with this post, will help me do that.
My plan is to serialize the latest version of my hitherto unpublished novel, Death at Valken Court, and make it available for you to read FOR FREE. I invite all of you to become beta readers, editors, critics, fact checkers, book reviewers, and eventually, I hope, enthusiasts and advocates for this project, and other projects to come.
Death at Valken Court, is a (gently allegorical) family saga and fictional history. It is the first novel in what will be a series of standalone novels I have been pondering for at least three decades. It tells of a wealthy family’s inescapable curse; an epic intergenerational revenge; and a noble democracy’s decline and fall.

Tom Leonard is a lifelong resident of the upper Great Lakes region. Following his graduation from Michigan State University, he was employed as a social worker, specializing in services to the mentally ill. Changing careers in midlife, he became one of Michigan’s leading advocates for environmental causes. He lobbied for public policy improvements in air, land, and water use; defended wildlife habitat; and was an early proponent of clean energy, climate protection, and sustainable business practices. Now he writes fiction. His work examines the American character and mythos. Legally blind, he writes with the help of assistive technology. He lives with his wife Susan and their two cats, Ursula and Theodore.
